The Delayed Resolution Plan
Linda Goin

New Year's resolutions are not lost on me - I only have about a five-year delay factor involved with these little tools of self-discipline. This is beneficial in some respects. For instance, the scale I bought six years ago still looks brand new. Finally, last year, it got a small workout - even if I didn't.
Six years ago, I resolved to save money. Last year was the first time I actually managed this feat. And I managed to do it for a whole year! Now this practice is part of my life. I can't imagine not setting aside a percentage of my income each month to invest in my portfolio.
Five years ago, I promised myself I would be more aware of my surroundings. This is the year that resolution will take place. For instance, I've just noticed the dust on top of the fridge, the toothpaste splatters on the bathroom mirror, and the food crumbs between the buttons of my keyboard...
I also just noticed all the new additions to BUYandHOLD. Some of these items, for some reason, escaped me entirely while writing for this company during the past year. What fun stuff! This week, I want to share with you what I learned so I can imprint this information on my own brain cells. In other words, you are now a recipient of my new "Awareness Resolution" from five years ago.
Admittedly, I noticed the new layout when it was implemented in September. It's a very classy look, in my opinion. Very compact, too - everything I need is right on the front page - not buried deep within the site. Of course, I knew how creative the BUYandHOLD folks were when I discovered they designed their own logo (the acorn in the upper left corner). I can relate to trees growing from nuts (it's a personal thing).
After BUYandHOLD introduced their new Advisory Services last
spring, I promised myself I would invest in the information.
This breaks a record - I actually kept this resolution within
the year. It was easy to follow the instructions, and almost
too easy to subscribe. I clicked on the advisory service I wanted
to buy, with the thought that I would need to pull out my credit
card. Nice surprise - I was able to pay the minimal fee for
the service with excess funds in my account. What a great idea,
since I've been trying to avoid my credit cards.
Within minutes of purchase, the first email arrived from BUYandHOLD with instructions on how to access the information. You need to login with your username and password; however, once you see the great information, you'll want to invest immediately. I already picked a new stock (with my daughter's approval pending...) because of the information I found within the new subscription.
Another new service is real time trades. Although these aren't
the bargain basement "$9.99" trades you often see
advertised from other brokers, it's still a great rate. Frankly,
the $40 minimum price for the real-time trade service (which
includes the $15 fee) is still far less expensive than many
brokers. Plus, it's a psychological thing for me...if the trade
will cost me more than my regular low monthly fee at BUYandHOLD,
I tend to hang onto what I've got rather than jump the gun to
sell. If the stock is THAT appealing, it's worth the price to
go for it with BUYandHOLD to keep it safe in my regular online
portfolio.
Speaking of portfolios, one of the newest services at BUYandHOLD is the personalized "stock watch" portfolios and lists with email and news alerts. Cora and I both used these research tools at other sites within the past year. Now, we don't have to surf all over the Internet for different lists - they can be kept all in one place with our investment portfolio. We can create portfolios for immediate news from our real-time portfolio, as well as portfolios for play, for serious research, and another one for stocks we would purchase if we were rich and famous.
If we were rich and famous, we might invest in ALL the Fortune 500 companies listed in all the states where our families live. The new Fortune 500 Companies by State map is a fun, educational tool for those who dream about owning numerous blue-chip stocks. Imagine my brother's consternation when his niece called to ask him which four blue-chip companies had a home base in his state. He could only name one of the four, and he's a serious investor. Cora and I spent time making a game out of this tool: Which state has more blue-chip companies? Why? Which one has the least?
This is also a great tool for those investors who believe in the "Buy American" ethic. Find out what's going on in your neck of the woods, if you didn't already know. Remember - it's an awareness thing.
On the business side of this new awareness issue - did you know you could be an affiliate for BUYandHOLD? If you have a Web site, you can partner with this broker and earn money for each new account you sign up through your links and promotional efforts. This is the way to make the system work for you. If you've learned how important it is to save and invest in your future, you can actually reward yourself for the effort with this tool.
This is just the beginning of my new awareness discipline for BUYandHOLD. The first thought that comes to mind is this: if this company is as innovative and creative in upcoming years as they've been within the past year, then I doubt I'll need to go anywhere else for my investment resources.
My second thought is that I need to vacuum this keyboard, clean the fridge, and...hmmm...I can't remember what the third thing was...
Until Next Week,
Linda Goin
